Description:
Ibonia Estate is a remarkable 200-hectare coffee farm located just outside Kiambu town in Kenya’s renowned central highlands. With nearly 60% of the estate preserved as natural forest, the farm is deeply committed to protecting the surrounding ecosystem, creating an environment where coffee thrives alongside native wildlife including deer, owls, hawks, and other local species.
The estate’s rich soils, high elevation, and cool climate provide ideal conditions for producing exceptional Kenyan coffee. Management at Ibonia places particular emphasis on the performance of the SL28 variety, which makes up the majority of the farm’s plantings and contributes significantly to the vibrant acidity and layered sweetness found in the cup.
Ripe cherries are selectively hand-picked and processed using traditional Kenyan double-washed methods, including float tank separation and careful washing with fresh local water before drying on raised beds. This meticulous approach produces a cup with outstanding clarity and structure.
In the cup, Ibonia Estate delivers lively blueberry sweetness balanced by bright lime acidity and a smooth toffee finish. The result is a complex yet approachable coffee that beautifully showcases the elegance, intensity, and precision of classic Kenyan washed coffees.
