Roasted by Lottie Lane Coffee Roasters to celebrate International Women’s Day, this coffee honours the women shaping coffee communities around the world.

Grown in the Rusizi District of western Rwanda near Lake Kivu, Rwanda Mushaka comes from a high-altitude region renowned for its bright, clean washed coffees. The cherries are processed at the Mushaka wet mill, a privately operated washing station sitting around 1,800 m above sea level.

Mushaka was founded in 2017 by Beathe Nyirankunzurwanda, a former local coffee trader who believed her community could produce exceptional specialty coffee. Starting with little equipment and just a single container of cherries in its first year, Beathe, alongside her son, steadily built the mill into a respected producer. Through hands-on leadership, reinvestment in infrastructure, and close partnerships with local smallholder farmers, Mushaka has grown into a hub for high-quality coffee in the region.

At the wet mill, carefully selected ripe cherries are sorted and pulped before undergoing a short fermentation and slow drying on raised beds for 15–22 days. This traditional washed process highlights the clarity and vibrant fruit character that Rwanda’s coffees are celebrated for.

Today, Mushaka reflects Beathe’s determination and vision, strengthening local farming networks while sharing the distinctive character of Rwanda’s highlands with coffee drinkers around the world.

This special release celebrates women across the coffee supply chain, from producers to roasters, whose passion and leadership continue to shape the industry.
